Martin Visser designed the SZ02 in 1960 for Spectrum, the Dutch modernist furniture maker he led as art director from 1954. The brief was his own: pure materials, honest construction, nothing that didn't need to be there. Six decades later the chair is in the Pastoe collection, unchanged — a slim tubular steel frame, saddle leather slung between it, a leather lace and buckle for retensioning when the hide relaxes. That the leather needs occasional tightening is not a flaw. It's proof the chair was designed to outlast its first owner.
