Description

The Lattice Bench, designed by Norm Architects, is a masterful piece that balances transparency and solidity through its unique wooden lattice structure. The legs of the bench create an interplay of light and shadow, offering a visual experience that changes with perspective. Inspired by traditional Japanese architectural elements like shutters, the design provides a calming, repetitive pattern that echoes the aesthetics found in front of traditional Japanese stores and restaurants. The bench is available in natural oak, white oak, smoke oak and sumi ash and comes in four sizes.

Ariake translates as “daybreak” in Japanese and perfectly signals a new beginning for the union of 2 of that country’s well-established furniture companies, Legnatec and Hirata Chair. Drawing from Japanese and Scandinavian influences, the coalescing brand engages a roster of well-known international designers for its diverse collection, including Copenhagen-based mainstays Norm Architects and noted Swede Steffan Holm, along with Anderssen & Voll (Norway), Gabriel Tan (Singapore), Keiji Ashizawa (Japan), Shin Azumi (Japan) and Zoe Mowat (Canada).

First conceived when a group of the designers gathered for an intensive design workshop that took place in the small town of Morodomi in southern Japan, the expanded collection employs tactile natural materials and rich finishes. Superbly crafted furnishings are fashioned in oak, ash, hinoki and cedar woods; buttery leather; paper cord and fine upholstery fabrics; as well as unique Japanese-inflected finishes. Each piece is crafted in Morodomi, from Mowat’s Aiizome storage cabinet painted with sumi ink, red dye and two shades of Japanese indigo, to Ashizawa’s evocative plumply cushioned Raft platform sofa, to Anderssen & Voll’s sculpted-wood Blest side chair with its curved back reminiscent of a sail.

“Norms aren’t boring,” Jonas Bjerre-Poulsen of Norm Architects says, reflecting on the name of his Copenhagen-based design studio, formed with fellow architect Kasper Rønn. “On the contrary, the firm wants to make use of all that centuries-old wisdom that we now know as design.” Norm encompasses furniture, dinner service, kitchenware and lighting fixtures as well as architecture projects with third partner Linda Korndal.

“There’s something in our design culture that’s born out of our connection to the Nordic climate, to the crafts and the natural materials that surround us, and that 'something' makes us stand out,” Jonas says. Norm Architects has garnered numerous prestigious awards such as Red Dot, IF Design Award and Design Plus Award. Jonas focuses on aesthetics and Kasper concentrates on technology but the lines are often blurred on any offering, says Jonas. “You should be able to look at it in 10, 20 years’ time and still find it useful and beautiful.”
