Description

Originally designed in 1955, the desk features a sleek veneer tabletop in walnut or black-coloured ash, supported by chromed or black powder-coated steel legs with matching solid wood details. The combination of natural materials and precise construction creates a balanced expression suited to both home offices and professional environments. An optional solid wood document drawer can be fitted to either side, providing convenient storage while maintaining the desk’s streamlined profile. Designed by Arne Jacobsen, one of Denmark’s most influential architects and designers.

“It's important that each of us think of sustainability in our everyday lives,” says Vibeke Panduro, who along with husband Jesper founded Danish brand Skagerak in 1976. “Invest in furniture that you absolutely love and eventually can pass on to the next generation.” She’s her own best example, recently furnishing a home with pieces some of which were 50 years old and juxtaposed with a new dining table from one of the company’s designers, Chris Liljenberg Halstrøm. Sustainability runs deep in the veins of the family-owned company, along with a timeless aesthetic rooted in the Scandinavian heritage and skilled craftmanship.

The offerings include a wide range of indoor and outdoor furniture, beautifully pared-down lighting and a number of natural wood décor and kitchen accessories, all produced from responsibly sourced timber and as an ethically conscious B Corp. Skagerak’s name is inspired by the strait connecting Denmark with Sweden and Norway, also called Skagerrak (with two Rs). “We like to think of ourselves as similar to the strait: forever the same—unchangeable—yet always on the move and presented in new ways,” Vibeke says. “Constantly mixing state-of-the-art ideas and methods with longstanding knowhow and virtues deeply embedded in the Nordic culture.”

"The fundamental factor is proportion,” said this icon of Danish design and minimalist style shortly before his death in 1971. Though trained as an architect (and he abhorred being called a designer), Arne Jacobsen perhaps is most remembered today for his furniture, lighting and household objects. His 3-legged Ant Chair (1951) inspired by a Charles Eames plywood chair was an instant classic and led to other sculptural furnishings such as the Egg Chair and Swan seating series.

Born in 1902, he originally trained as a bricklayer before studying at the Royal Danish Academy of Arts. Visiting the 1925 Exposition Internationale des Art Decoratifs in Paris, he was forever influenced by the modernists Le Corbusier and Mies van der Rohe. A major figure in Danish architecture, Arne Jacobsen’s more memorable products include the 1960s Cylinda line of bar and table goods for Stelton, acclaimed with numerous international design awards.
