Description
The sharp graphics and bold colors intimate the concrete facades and dramatic shadows of the urban landscape in Oaxaca, where this boutique brand is rooted. Here, too, is where the family of skilled artisans apply 4 generations of craft to each handmade rug, made from wool of local sheep. “Nichos” translate loosely to objects used in diorama boxes, and the cube pattern loosely suggests this inspiration. Multiple sizes are available, including custom orders upon request.

Brand
Matiz
With Matiz, Jezarely Miguel draws deep from her familial roots in Oaxaca, the southwestern state of Mexico, celebrated for its long tradition of textile crafts. These uncharacteristically soft, 100% sheep’s wool rugs are handmade in the town of Teotitlan del Valle, with skilled methods passed down over 4 generations.
The name for the boutique studio, which she founded in 2021, is Spanish for "hue.” It’s a fitting nod to the plant-based coloring applied throughout: cascara de nuez for browns, añil for blues, flor de cempasuchil for yellows and oranges. For the pinks and purplish-reds, it’s cochinilla, a native parasite that lives on cactuses and is dried and crushed for the dye.
This traditional craftsmanship is given fresh interpretation with the contemporary exploration of shapes and forms that characterize Jezarely’s aesthetic. The graphic patterns further draw from the geography and other details that inspire her. It’s a sensibility informed by this Portland-based designer’s expertise in commercial interior design and sustainability. She collaborates directly with rug artisans, encouraging them to set their own wages, and supporting them by facilitating continued creation and methods. This is as much a mission as business for her: “I feel like everyone should know about the beautiful Mexican craftsmanship that Oaxaca, specifically, can do.”
Designer
Jezarely Miguel
Oaxaca, with its deeply rich culture including craft, beckoned founder Jezarely Miguel, whose roots are in the Mexican state, though she was raised in her native Portland, Oregon. Longing to re-connect with the “warmth and vibrancy” of her familial home during the recent pandemic, coupled with recognizing a gap for sustainable and ethically sourced products from there designed with a modern aesthetic, the commercial interior designer started Matiz.
A team of Oaxaca-based artisans collaborate on not only the weaving of the rugs, but the all the wool textiles wholly made there. Now based in Los Angeles, Jezarely visits the southwestern Mexican state of Teotitlan del Valle, and works remotely with the team there. Each rug is hand made from start to finish using natural and local resources, from one-of-a kind dyes and pigments—and all with minimal waste and carbon footprint. For this reason, customization in sizes and colors is an available option.
For Jezarely, Matiz is more than a brand. It’s a mission. For A+R and fans of Matiz, each on of these rugs is a work of art and craft.
